Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore

I suggerimenti di Alberto, proprietario di Villa Jejia

"Why choose a holiday on Lake Maggiore? There are many things you can do and see, itineraries to explore by motorbike and bicycle, walks and excursions, gastronomic trips, characteristic restaurants and...boat trips of course! These are my suggestions. Absolutely tested!”

What to do on Lake Maggiore

What to do on Lake Maggiore

Visit to the Borromean Islands

The visit to the Borromean Islands: tickets for the islands can be bought directly to Stresa; in the morning you can visit Isola Bella and see the beautiful Palazzo Borromeo with its botanical garden, then go to Isola Pescatori and, after an excursion of the island, I would recommend having lunch at Ristorante Italia (perhaps it would be advisable to book) and I would ask for a table in the garden near the entrance with a view of Baveno. The cost is around €25 per person. It is particular for its position and the view (at least for me) and is run by two brothers who are fishermen, therefore excellent lake fish.

Locarno

If the weather isn't great you can go to Locarno by boat from Stresa, because the boat has a closed part so you can stay sheltered. The departure is around 11.00 -11.15 from Stresa and it takes about 3 hours to get to Locarno. It is possible to have lunch on board for around €15/per person (lunch is nice).

Mount Mottarone

Another walk that is worth it for me is the one to the summit of Mottarone at 1500 metres. In summer, on hot days, people also go there to get some cool air. If the sky is clear you can see 7 lakes from the summit (Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, Lake Mergozzo, Lake Monate, Lake Comabbio, Lake Varese, Lake Biandronno)

Lake Orta

Maybe not on Sunday, even Lake Orta, a short distance from Lake Maggiore, is worth a visit for the beauty of its village, Orta, full of restaurants and shops. You can also take a trip to the very small and characteristic island of San Giulio where there is a characteristic monastery where cloistered nuns are still found today. On the islet of San Giulio there is only one restaurant... with a splendid view, where possibly have lunch.

Arona

Another interesting trip is to the Rocca di Arona with a visit to the Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo, affectionately called San Carlone, a 35 meter high statue where you can climb inside and admire the entire lake from the top.
